When the dog in Dennis the menace the cartoon is a Sheepdog, why did they use another breed in the movie?

Well, I don't believe Hollywood sticks to the original characters. Sometimes producers and directors take liberties with the way a character is portrayed, to the point that they believe then can do it better.
