Should I wear a (fake) wedding band while traveling?

I am a Caucasian woman and I will be traveling in South America, almost all in Chile and Peru, but possibly spending some time in Costa Rica as well. I won't be going to Colombia or anything. I will be in airports and on busses alone at times, but I will mostly be with a larger group. I haven't used one before, but I have heard that it is very wise in dangerous or very male-dominated countries, and friends have used them for security. I am only sixteen, but I could be mistaken for eighteen or nineteen. Should I wear a wedding band while I am alone? Will this be useful or necessary?
